The UN Global Goal: No Poverty
"Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential."

End Poverty in all its forms everywhere. The Goal of No Poverty has 7 targets:
  • Eradicate extreme poverty
  • Reduce poverty by at least 50%
  • Implement social protection systems
  • Equal rights to ownership, basic services, technology and economic resources
  • Build resilience to environmental, economic and social disasters
  • Mobilize resources to implement policies to end poverty
  • Create pro-poor and gender sensitive policy frameworks

Teaching Ideas:
  • Read No Poverty: Why it Matters with your class
  • Have students select one of these case studies of how SDG's Funds are working to achieve No Poverty
  • If you want your students to think critically about foreign aid and why donating is charities is not addressing the root of the problem, a great documentary is Poverty Inc.
  • One of the best teaching tools for your students to explore factors of poverty is the Canadian Geographic interactive Developing World map. One way I have used this in the classroom is having students compare the HDI of their country (for example, Canada) to a developing country.
  • Check out this lesson from the World's Largest Lesson: Global Poverty Requires Local Solutions
  • Check out this lesson from the World's Largest Lesson: The World is Not Equal. Is that Fair?
  • If you would like to teach your students about how kids can contribute to their communities, check out Empatico's lesson on Helping Hands
Resources:
  • How one goat is helping lift a whole community out of poverty
  • After a cyclone, a strong home and future
  • Transforming challenges into opportunities
  • Canadian Geographic's interactive Developing World Map. You can also order one for your class here if you are a member of Canadian Geographic Education.
  • No Poverty comic
  • It's Your World by Chelsea Clinton is a great book to read with your students, but even if you don't purchase the book, you can check out resources from Chapter 1: $1.25 a Day: Poverty Around the World

A Developing World

Compare countries' statistics, learn about the Human Development Index and explore our changing world.

Goal 1: No Poverty - SDG Tracker

The UN explains: Extreme poverty rates have fallen by more than half since 1990. While this is a remarkable achievement, one-in-five people in developing regions still live on less than $1.90 a day. Millions more make little more than this daily amount and are at risk of slipping back into extreme poverty.
