My name is Breanna Heels and first and foremost, I am an educator.
I am a teacher adventurer and geographic education advocate. In 2016, I was a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow and traveled to the Arctic Svalbard. This expedition changed my worldview, and has allowed me to bring the Arctic back to my students. I am a National Geographic Certified Educator, and also a Geo-Inquiry Ambassador for Canadian Geographic.
The Changemaker Classroom started with the desire for my students to become global citizens. Even though we lived in a rural community, I wanted them to connect with the world. I wanted to give them roots and the world. It started in 2015, when using the big idea of Think Global, Act Local, students selected a UN Global Goal and then developed local action plans to work towards that goal. I had never seen students become so empowered and engaged — and The Changemaker Classroom came to be.
